How laser acupuncture can help Bell's palsy at West London Osteopathy, Naturopathy, Acupuncture Clinic
Bell's palsy is a form of temporary facial paralysis resulting from damage or trauma to one of the two facial nerves that is known as the seventh cranial nerve. The paralysis causes distortion of facial features and interferes with normal facial function, such as closing the eyes, chewing, and eating. The onset is rapid and is characterised by unilateral facial weakness and patients often fear that they may have suffered a stroke. The cause of Bell's palsy is not clear, most cases are thought to be caused by the herpes virus that causes cold sores.
Each year in the United States around 40,000 people develop Bell’s palsy, and approximately 1 in 5000 people in the UK gets affected. It affects approximately 1 person in 65 during a lifetime. Worldwide statistics indicate a frequency of about .02% of the population. Incidence of Bell's palsy in males and females, as well as in various races, is approximately the same. The condition can develop at any age, but seems to be most common in those aged between 15 and 60 years. Laser acupuncture can help in the treatment of Bell's palsy by reducing inflammation of the nerve that controls muscles on one side of the face, and by promoting release of vascular and immunomodulatory factors and enhancing local microcirculation, by increasing the diameter and blood flow velocity of peripheral arterioles and as well as nerve and muscular stimulation by influencing the production of the body's communication substance hormones and neurotransmitters. The resulting biochemical changes activate the body's self-regulating homeostatic systems.

Management of low back pain at West London Osteopath, Naturopath, Acupuncture Clinic
Low back pain is very common. It affects millions of people worldwide. In most cases, you don't need surgery for low back pain. But in rare cases, severe back pain can be a sign of prolapsed disc or cauda equina syndrome (CES) a condition that usually requires urgent surgical treatment. Sciatica is a common neurological complaint, the most common cause of which is a prolapsed disc that causes pressure on a nerve root. The sciatic nerve runs under the piriformis muscle from the lower back, down through the hips and buttocks, and along the back of the leg into the foot. It originates from the L4 through S3 spinal nerves. The sciatic nerve supplies sensation and strength to the deep muscles of the buttocks and hips, as well as the muscles of the hamstring group, the lower leg, and some of the muscles of the foot, and the reflexes of the leg. Any of the muscles that are directly supplied by this nerve can become affected. As such, when the sciatic nerve is impaired, it can lead to muscle weakness and or numbness or tingling in the leg, ankle, foot, and or toes.
Additional common causes of sciatica include:
-Piriformis syndrome which develops when the piriformis muscle, a small muscle that lies deep in the buttocks, becomes tight or spasms, which can put pressure on and irritate the sciatic nerve- Spinal stenosis results from narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back with pressure on the nerves -Spondylolisthesis is a condition in which one vertebra slips forward over another one-Degenerative disc disease, wear and tear or breakdown of discs, which act as cushions between the vertebrae-Pregnancy.

Cupping Therapy
Cupping therapy dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and ancient cultures. One of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, describes how the ancient Egyptians used cupping therapy in 1,550 B.C. It is based on the belief that certain health problems can be caused by stagnant blood and a poor energy flow through one’s body. To fix or prevent those health issues, cupping practitioners apply cups typically glass or silicon to the skin to create a pressure that sucks the skin inward. The coloring typically ranges from bright red to a darker purple, and can last from 3 days to a week. A darker coloring means that there is a high level of toxins and stagnation in the section of the body that has been treated. In this case, the marks can last for up to 3 weeks. Cupping is used to relieve back and neck pain, stiff muscles, anxiety, fatigue, migraines, rheumatism, and cellulite, herpes zoster, facial paralysis, cough and dyspnea, acne, lumbar disc herniation & cervical spondylosis.

Thyroid Supporting Nutrients
The thyroid gland is a significant regulator of cellular metabolism. As a result, it influences numerous physiologic processes including:
-
Reproduction
-
Development and growth
-
Lipid and carbohydrate metabolism
-
Cardiac myocyte activity
-
Cognitive, liver, and kidney function
Because of its broad impact on health, it is clinically important to support the function of the thyroid gland. One way to do this is by supplementing the diet with the nutrients required to synthesize thyroid hormone, especially iodine, L-tyrosine, and selenium.
Worldwide, iodine deficiency is correlated with poor thyroid function. Many studies have shown that a diet rich in iodine or iodine supplementation supports healthy thyroid function.
Selenium is as important as iodine for supporting thyroid function. The thyroid gland contains more selenium by weight than any other organ in the human body. Selenium is required for the production of the T3 thyroid hormone. Without selenium, there would be no activation of thyroid hormone. For this reason, it’s clinically necessary to correct selenium deficiency. Research has demonstrated an effective form of supplemental selenium for the thyroid is selenomethionine. The average recommended amount when supplementing selenium is 200 mcg per day for adults. High doses of selenium (more than 400 mcg per day) is typically not recommended.
Thyroid hormones are synthesized from the amino acid tyrosine. It is usually included in thyroid support formulas for this reason. Tyrosine is also converted into catecholamines (“fight-or-flight” hormones, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine) in the brain. Entry of circulating tyrosine into the brain is dependent on the ratio of tyrosine to other large amino acids in the circulation since they all compete for the same carrier to move across the blood-brain barrier. Supplemental dosing of tyrosine has been shown to increase the level of tyrosine in the brain, and for this reason, high doses of supplemental tyrosine are not recommended. The typical amount found in thyroid support formulas is 250 -500 mg, which, when taken with other protein foods as recommended, is more likely to be utilized as needed in the thyroid glan and other tissues, and less likely to cross the blood brain barrier.
